Lecture Name: Role of the United Nations
Lecturer: OSHIMA Kenzo, the former Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations
The report written by participants (High school students in Hiroshima) is posted without editing.
I heard the presentation by an ambassador of United Nations Kenzo Oshima. The topic was a role of UN and a role of Japan in UN. United Nations was organized for world peace and keeping a safe word in 1945 in San Francisco peace conference after WWⅡ. Mainly, UN discusses international treaties for an act of terrorism, conflicts, gap of economy, global warming and nuclear weapons in the United Nations General Assembly. Japan had been taking an important role in UN. I became interested in UN. So, I want to search it more and more.

I took a lecture from Mr. Oshima. The main part of the lecture was about United Nation, United Nation Security Council and relationship between Japan and United Nation. The most impressive word he said was “No United Nation reform without Security Council reform”. Also, another impressive word for me was “United Nation was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity from hell.” It was a new perspective for me, so it was also interesting for me. he also said about the task in the changes of international situation. Right now, especially United states is just following to get budget as much as possible, “American first” he said it’s so dangerous idea and I also agree with his opinion. I learned a lot of things through this lecture. Before I took this lecture, I thought United Nation is an organization which is like a government of the earth but after I heard “United Nation was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity from hell.” I changed my opinion. Of course, they are trying to make a peace world but it’s so difficult to achieve but United Nation, which is one of the largest organization trying to make a better world even if it’s impossible to make a perfectly peaceful world. I restarted thinking about my future dream again after I took this lecture. I want to say thank you to Mr. Oshima. Thank you for coming and gave me an opportunity to take your lecture.

Oshima ambassador gave us a lecture on United Nations, which organized the world after the WWⅡ. He explained its role, its meaning to exist, and his feelings and hope for the UN. Also he focused on the necessity of the innovation of the Security Council. Then he asked us what role Japan should play in the “next” world, while he was talking about the situation of when UN was created is obviously different from that of now.
