Hiroshima for Global Peace

Hiroshima Television Corporation (Students’ report on the SDGs)

Do you know? Hiroshima Television x Together for the SDGs

Hiroshima Television Corporation, which celebrated its 60th anniversary this year, has continued to support the information network of the residents of the prefecture for many years with the goal of becoming an indispensable TV station in Hiroshima.
With the policy of “providing useful information to the residents of the prefecture, not just putting profit first, as a TV station,” the company is expanding the scope of its SDG activities. These activities are not limited to those related to television. For example, in response to the growing problem of children on waiting lists for childcare facilities and other issues related to child-raising, the company collaborates with medical institutions and local student volunteers to hold an event called “Cheer for Child-raising Parents – Sukoyaka,” which provides health checkups for young children. The company also focuses on the information app “Hiroshima TV app,” whose disaster prevention-related content, in particular, employs illustrations that are easily understood regardless of nationality, age, or gender to make the app easy to use.

Toward the realization of a peaceful society as a TV station

We believe that the philosophy of the SDGs is in line with the concept of “broadcasting standards,” which stipulates that the company should contribute to the realization of a peaceful society. Therefore, it is important for the company, as a TV media, to gain even a wider understanding of the SDGs. Under the slogan “Together for the SDGs,” Hiroshima Television plays a role in having the SDGs take root in the community by sending out its messages for world peace both within Japan and abroad, and holding events that help raise children and revitalize the community, in addition to providing information. As the demand for information on disaster prevention, child-raising, and regional revitalization will grow further in the future, it is hoped that the various measures currently taken as a TV station that can reach a large number of people will be promoted.

What we can do to coexist with the SDGs

When it came to the SDGs, we felt that they sounded so huge in scale that there was not much we could do personally. However, after the interview, we think that there are many things that can be carried out either by individuals or within the larger framework of a TV station. In addition, being a TV media company may be what makes it possible for Hiroshima Television to connect people who have a desire for a sustainable world and to promote a wider understanding of the SDGs. In a society facing various problems, we want to think about what we can do and what companies can do, share them, and put them into practice.
