Hiroshima-ICAN Academy on Nuclear Weapons and Global Security 2022 – Hiroshima Session Day 1 – Opening
The Hiroshima Session of the “Hiroshima-ICAN Academy on Nuclear Weapons and Global Security” was held in Hiroshima City from Wednesday, November 9 to Saturday, November 12. This was the first time it was held in person in three years since 2019.
On the first day of the Hiroshima Session, an orientation was held in the morning. At the orientation, Mr. Akira Kawasaki, a member of the ICAN International Steering Committee, gave an opening speech to the participants.
After the orientation, participants visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the afternoon. In Peace Memorial Park, the participants listened attentively to the guide’s explanations as they visited the monuments and the A-bombed trees on the park grounds.
After the park tour, the participants visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. During the tour of the museum, some of the participants were moved to tears by the A-bombed remains and documents. While reflecting after the tour, many participants expressed their strong conviction to abolish nuclear weapons, with statements such as “We must act to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again.”
After the first day’s program, participants enjoyed a welcome dinner. During the dinner, participants talked not only about nuclear abolition but also about their own cultures and personal lives, and deepened their friendship with each other.
