Hiroshima for Global Peace

Future Leaders' Program 2019-AugustFuture Leaders’ Program for Global Peace 2019 Report (August 9) Vol.2

Date: August 9 , 2019

Lecture Name: Nuclear disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Security

Lecturer: Mr. TOSAKI Hirofumi, Center for the Promotion of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, Japan Institute of International Affairs

The report written by participants (High school students in Hiroshima) is posted without editing.

I participated in the “Future Leader’s Program for Global Peace” on August 9th and learned about nuclear disarmament, Nuclear security and Non-proliferation through this lecture. I learned that the abolition of nuclear weapons, which is not easy matter, can’t be solved alone. I was able to understand the problem more deeply again. So what I think I can do for that, is to have a discussion about peace and nuclear weapons with a lot of foreign countries people and share our opinions together. I want to take actions which I can do myself.

Professor Tosaki, as stated in the title of his lecture, took up the subject of “nuclear issue” , making use of actual data and concrete data such as the president’s remarks, gave a lecture on nuclear trends to date, issues related to nuclear

disarmament, the international security environment, and Japan’s involvement.

In particular, I thought that the issues of nuclear modernization, nuclear disarmament, and the relationship between the nuclear issue and Japan were important and immediate to us.

Through this lecture, I`ve learned  a lot of new knowledge about the nuclear issue, some of which concern Japan nearly.

Eventually, my former thought has changed to the belief that peace-building can be achieved by building trust between countries, regardless of possessing nuclear weapons.
