Hiroshima for Global Peace

Future Leaders' Program 2019-OctoberFuture Leaders’ Program for Global Peace 2019 Report (October 6) Vol.1

Date: October 6 , 2019

Lecture Name: Education Issues in Developing Countries

Lecturer: Professor IKEDA Hideo, Hiroshima University

The report written by participants (High school students in Hiroshima) is posted without editing.

President Ikeda gave a lecture on what is necessary for us, who understand the gap and who will lead the future.

The first point is about the disparity between countries.  The gap between developing and developed countries is expanding rather than being eliminated.

The second point is about children’s home and life.
In poor households, there are many children who are unable to attend school because of the large number of children who have to do child labor.

The third point is about language.
There seems to be a big gap between high-income people who can use English and those who are not.
And this is also true in the future of Japan.

Finally, about the power that we need for the future.  Among what Ikeda said, I want to acquire the basic knowledge, eliminate preconceptions and assumptions, and be able to accept things flexibly.

Professor Ikeda talked about education in developing countries from various aspects, such as war, conflict, religion, disparity and so on. In Philippines, many children are forced to work and help house chores. Because of that, many children in Philippines and also other developing countries are not allowed to go to school. On the other hands, almost all children live in city side are afford to go to school, and they get high quality education. That’s the other big problem. Therefore, as you can understand from what I mentioned, the education problem is very complicated with many other issues.
