Future Leaders' Program 2019-OctoberFuture Leaders’ Program for Global Peace 2019 Report (October 27) Vol.2
Date: October 27 , 2019
Lecture Name: Emergency support after a conflict
Lecturer: WATABE Mayumi, Lecturer of Bunkyo University
The report written by participants (High school students in Hiroshima) is posted without editing.
Now, the number of refugees is increasing more and more and it is reaching to record revel.
To helping refugees, volunteers have some difficulty.
The first one is “Bias of support”. Humanitarian support is generally tend to concentrate on places where assistance is easy.
Fairness of humanitarian support between regions is inquired.
The second is the “Danger of terrorism”.
There is an increasing of tendency for terrorists to target humanitarian actors as a target of terrorism in order to show their influence on society.
The challenge that humanitarian actors have is how to provide efficient and effective humanitarian assistance in situations where safety is threatened.
The third is “A long road to peace building”.
Humanitarian assistance must be in a neutral position and must contact victims and perpetrators. However, they have various emotions, and it is not easy to understand and forgive each other.
The biggest goal for humanitarian actors is to eliminate the significance and value of the United Nations and NGOs in this world. To achieve this tremendous challenge of peace building-“Moon shot”-we need an appropriate means-“Rocket Science”. As Jules Verne says, it is necessary to work hard without forgetting the belief that “What humans can imagine can always be realized.”

Ms. Mayumi Watabe lectured us about conflict, massacre and refugee problem.
I think it is the most important to have a big belief for peace building and keep on doing what we are doing for peace.
Through this lecture, I leaned that these are big issues of all over the world. So, we must think about them as well as nuclear weapon problem.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your opinions Ms. Mayumi Watabe.
