Hiroshima for Global Peace

Governor’s Statement on the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations’ (Nihon Hidankyo) Nobel Peace Prize

The comment of the Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture regarding the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations’ (Nihon Hidankyo) Nobel Peace Prize is as follows:

(Provisional Translation)

I would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations’ (Nihon Hidankyo) on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

For many years, Hibakusha (A-bomb survivors) have been sharing the reality of the Atomic bombings through various testimonies and documents based on their own experiences, while advocating for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Understanding the devastating effects of nuclear weapon use is the first step towards achieving their abolition, and the unwavering efforts, actions, and movements of the Hibakusha towards that goal are the source of strength for advocating the abolition of nuclear weapons. Their contributions are extremely significant.

We express our gratitude for shining a light on the indomitable efforts of the Hibakusha and for the recognition of their continued advocacy for peace. We sincerely admire the efforts and achievements of all Hibakusha who have been working towards peace.

The road to the abolition of nuclear weapons may still be long, but we hope that this Nobel Peace Prize will serve as an opportunity for people around the world to reaffirm their commitment to working towards the abolition of nuclear weapons.

The Hiroshima Prefectural Government will continue to strive towards contributing to the progress of efforts for the realization of a world without nuclear weapons.
