Message from Mary Robinson (Chair of The Elders, First woman President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights)
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 marked the end of a terrible war in which untold innocent civilians were slain. Both cities have since shown great dignity and fortitude, not only in rebuilding but in confronting their history and becoming powerful advocates for peace. Just as Covid-19 highlights our common vulnerabilities, so the efforts of the Hiroshima Prefecture to preserve the memory of 1945 remind us that nuclear weapons do not discriminate. An attack on one city is an attack on all humanity. I offer my solidarity as you continue to strive for peace, dialogue and comprehensive, multilateral nuclear disarmament.
75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima
The year 2020 falls on the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing. Is a nuclear weapon a past event? There are still over 13,000 nuclear weapons on the planet. Why don’t you think about peace together on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing?
