Interview

What motivated you to apply HOPe YA?

My great-grandmother, who is an atomic bomb survivor, told me about her experience of the time. That have made me think what I can do to help abolish nuclear weapons. Through my past activities, I have learned that many people do not know yet much about the damage caused by the atomic bombs, even in Japan. I have started to think that the abolition of nuclear weapons has not progressed fast enough because we do not know enough how dangerous nuclear weapons are.

I decided to apply for the HOPe youth ambassadorship because I wanted to gather the power of people who want to do something, and to make more people aware of the damage caused by the atomic bomb.

What are your hobbies?

Tell us about your past activities that may have prepared you to become HOPe Youth Ambassador for a Nuclear-Free Sustainable Future.

Through taking part in many activities outside school, such as the Hiroshima Junior International Forum, I learned that my norm is not even the norm in Japan. I also learned the importance of carefully communicating my ideas.
In addition, I contacted to talk with people who are working for the abolition of nuclear weapons. That has made me think about what I can do to join the movement.
There is a lot more, but I think these are the two main things that will help me in the future.

What is your vision for the future in 2045?

I want to make it easier for people to learn about the damage caused by nuclear weapons without having to be in the A-bombed city.
I also want to see a future where we know clearly what kind of actions to take for the abolition of nuclear weapons, rather than people just learning about the issue.

What are your expectations and immediate plans as a HOPe YA?

The current generation still can listen directly to the testimonies of the Hibakusha. I believe that our action is very important. I will do my best to make the most of this precious youth ambassadorship.

Manami, we look forward to working with you for next two years!
