Hiroshima for Global Peace

Visit to the Embassy of Japan in France

On Thursday, November 2, 2023, the program participants visited the Embassy of Japan in France. At the embassy, the participants heard from Minister Yoshitake about French domestic politics, defense, and diplomacy under the theme of France in Japanese diplomacy. They also heard from Secretary Kato about economic relations between Japan and France.

Minister Yoshitake and Secretary Kato explained to the participants about the characteristics of French policies and the differences from and similarities with Japanese policies.

They also referred to Japanese companies expanding into France. The participants looked surprised to learn that many Japanese companies that have made inroads into France are contributing to the French economy.

One of the questions from the participants concerned how France would contribute to nuclear disarmament after participating in the G7 Hiroshima Summit. The embassy officials showed their expectations for France by stating that the country should demonstrate leadership in maintaining world peace by acting as a mediator between war countries to prevent the situation from getting worse, as well as by committing to arms control and encouraging other countries to prevent military expansion. They emphasize the role to be played by France toward realizing a peaceful world.
